Julia was stretching across a table to reach a wooden shaker that was just out of reach. She balanced on her belly, feet off the ground, grunting as she wiggled her fingers, willing them to lengthen. I watched, then said encouragingly, “It’s too far; you’ll have to walk around.” “Uh-huh” meaning yes, she replied as she planted her feet on the floor. Then she stepped away from the table, walked across the play space, into the sleep room, and then back again to the table where she took up the same position to try to reach the toy again, this time thinking a quick walk around may have helped!
